What happens when a show-goer leaves your venue without a CD or DVD in hand? You have lost a potential sale. Often, people overspend on vacation, and they may still want a copy of that CD or DVD weeks later. Would you like to regain those lost dollars? Of course.

WIth Daystar's Discs On Demand program, your customers can order your CD anytime they feel like it. We manufacture the product when it is ordered, so there is no out of pocket cost for you after the initial setup cost ($21.95). If we handle your duplication or replication, we will wave the setup cost. You determine the price for your product and your customer orders through our website. Daystar reserves a portion of each sale to cover our costs, and the remainder is passed on to you. You pay a more per disc when they are ordered each way, but it's almost like free money for you.

Many of our theater and venue clients order thousands of discs each year (some of you order that many each week). But storage space and cash flow can often keep you from taking advantage of your volume discounts.

At Daystar, we take a look at your monthly, seasonal and annual volumes to help you get the most cost effective deal. It's a win-win. You maximize your products and we get steady business.

With our volume program, you receive discs on the frequency you pick. For most clients, that's weekly. Knoxville area clients can pick up, and we travel to the Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg / Sevierville area once a week for deliveries. We are centrally located to much of the nation's population, so our shipping is fast and more economical than you may find elsewhere.

Daystar Music Group provides a wide variety of services, from custom-produced show DVDs, promotional items, or CD packages to pre-printed DVD blanks to be duplicated in house. Our award winning video, audio and graphics team can help you with existing projects and new ideas.

CD DVD Duplication Vs. Replication - What's the Difference?

Daystar Music Group is a CD DVD manufacturing and duplication company in Knoxville TN. Each day, we work with music artists, companies and organizations to help them get the best multimedia product, whether it is music, video, or training materials. When you decide to reproduce a CD or DVD, you essentially have two options: duplication or replication. We get a lot of question on which is better, but the truth is that your situation will determine what's best.

Understanding the differences is important in determining which process is best for your project. A duplicated CD/DVD is not only created using a different process than a replicated CD/DVD, but the actual final product is also different.

There are two ways to make a copy of a CD or DVD. Information can be burned on to a blank CD/DVD-R; this method is called duplication. Information can also added during the CD/DVD manufacturing process; this method is referred to as replication.

Understanding the differences is important in determining which process is best for your project. A duplicated CD/DVD is not only created using a different process than a replicated CD/DVD, but the actual final product is also different. After the duplication process is complete, the final product is a CD-R or a DVD-R. Replication stampers for CDs produce CD-ROMs. (ROM means Read Only Memory). The final product in the DVD replication process is a DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, or DVD-18.

CD DVD Duplication
Duplication is the process of recording or "burning" onto blank CD or blank DVD discs. This process is very similar to burning discs on your computer CD or DVD drive, just on a much larger scale. In Duplication, multi-disc duplicators are used to simultaneously burn several discs at once.

Duplication utilizes high-quality blank media and burn-speeds are set low to ensure the highest quality. Once the discs are burned, the top surface of the discs are printed using inkjet or thermal printers. The CD or DVD is then packaged according to the client's order, which is why turnaround times for Duplication are short, with many jobs being completed within 48 hours.

CD DVD Replication

Replication is a much more involved and complicated process. It requires more time and equipment to replicate a CD or DVD.  Most replicated jobs are completed in 7 to 10 business days. Rush service is available many times a year, but does make things a bit more expensive.

Before the replication process gets underway, we check the master for any obvious data corruption. Then, a glass master containing relevant data from client supplied master is created. Replication moves forward only after a perfect master is created. The glass master is used to develop a stamper. The stamper, in turn, is loaded into an injection molding machine that creates CD/DVD replicates. The quality of CD replication hinges upon the quality of the glass masters data. Through each successive step, quality and accuracy is consistently monitored to insure each disc is an exact replica or clone of the original. A layer of micro-thin aluminum is applied to the polycarbonate disc. It is then lacquered and printed before packaging.

Which one should you choose?

So which method is best for your needs: Duplication or Replication? It's a question of quality, quantity, and time.

Although Replication ensures the highest quality, it is rather impractical to place a low quantity Replication order. Reserve Replication for 1000 or more. For high-quantity orders, going with Replication will give you the best value.

If you need anything less than 500 discs, Duplication will be a more ideal option for you. It is the best value for the quantity and turnarounds are faster. Projects that require between 500 and 1000 pieces manufactured can be replicated or duplicated. However, cost efficiency for replication starts at 1000 units of your CD or DVD.

Advantages for Duplication and Replication

CD/DVD Duplication

  1. Fast turnaround. Many orders are available for pickup within 48 hours.
  2. Small quantities can be ordered each week, allowing you to budget weekly or for specific events.
  3. Reliable. Duplicated CDs and DVDs are reliable and look good.
  4. Master can be changed without pre-press charges.

CD/DVD Replication

  1. The unit costs are lower than duplicated discs.
  2. Both offset printing and screen printing is available for replicated discs.
  3. Replicated DVDs can contain 1 layer (DVD-5) of information, 2 layers on one side (DVD-9), 1 layer on each side (DVD-10) or 2 layers on each side (DVD-18). Many replication facilities are not yet set up for DVD-18 replication.
  4. Most replication facilities, as a result of their high volume run capability, can auto assemble discs into jewel cases, paper/tyvek sleeves, amaray cases, or cardboard sleeves.
  5. Higher compatibility with more playback machines.

Are There Noticeable Differences?

Yes. Duplicates and replicates work the same way. But they do look a little different. However, most consumers do not notice the difference between the two.

This year, Daystar will be providing the Boomsday music stage again. :)

Last year, 15 music groups from many genres took stage atop a large houseboat docked near Calhoun's. Thousands of music lovers stopped by, watched the various groups, and got comfortable as everyone waited for the main event, the gigantic Labor Day fireworks extravaganza.

You can save time on your project by preparing your artwork for us. When we receive your project, we check your designs and some changes may be necessary to get the best results. Here are some tips for preparing your artwork correctly.

Use Daystar templates. DOWNLOAD HERE
By using Daystar templates, you can be sure your files are the right format and resolution. Files provided in our templates require the least amount of time to prepare, which means you get your proofs faster. You can download the right template for your project here.

Give us the right format for your files.
We prefer Photoshop files (.psd) in layers. We also accept Tiff, PDF, EPS, JPG. If you are using Quark, please provide us with an EPS or PDF. All files must be at least 300 DPI.

Provide "Bleed" on your artwork.
Bleed is the area around artwork that gets cut off. It makes sure you don't end up with a white line around your artwork. Bleed should ideally extend 1/8 of an inch all the way around your artwork. Our templates allow for 1/4 inch of bleed.

Respond quickly to your proofs.
After we have prepped your files, you'll receive a proof by email. We need your approval to proceed. If you don't receive your proofs, or think they may be late, email or call us.

We're always here to help. So if you have questions, just ask. We respond quickly to phone calls and emails.
